The Cetina region

The geographical area around the Cetina river is commonly known as the Cetina region and forms a large part of the Dalmatian hinterland. It extends from the foot of the Dinara mountain, following the river along the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and encompassing the fields and settlements around it. The three largest towns in the region are Sinj, Trilj and Vrlika, each with its own history and cultural significance.

Sinj is the centre of the region as well as its largest town. Today's culture and traditions in Sinj reflect the historical struggle against Ottoman rule and the town's eventual liberation, with the final victorious battle still celebrated today. The celebration takes place every year on the first Sunday in August in the form of an equestrian competition—the Sinjska Alka. It honours Our Lady of Sinj, as the victory is believed to have come through the intercession of the Virgin Mary. Numerous surviving fortresses and fortifications stand as reminders of the region's turbulent past and evoke images of earlier times.

The expansive territory of the Cetina region is defined by the rich and diverse wilderness of which it is proud—the lush green nature along the river and the power of the monumental karst mountains surrounding it. All kinds of adventurers are welcome: hikers, cyclists, adrenaline seekers, wanderers, history enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates and respects nature.
