The town of Omiš

The history-rich town of Omiš sits at the mouth of the Cetina river, where its winding course finally meets the Adriatic Sea. This beautiful old town is perfectly situated for a wide variety of outdoor activities.

Besides all the advantages of a seaside setting, such as beautiful beaches and Mediterranean houses and streets, Omiš owes much of its picturesque character to the way it blends into the surrounding mountain massif and becomes part of the wild nature around it. The Fortica, or Starigrad, and Mirabella, or Peovica, fortresses offer a glimpse into the town's past: once built for defence, today they provide magnificent views over the open sea and the streets of Omiš below.

They are also reminders of the famous pirates of Omiš, who often used the fortresses as hideouts. The Corsairs of Almissa were infamous in the 12th and 13th centuries as masters of the sea who controlled trade. Today, the pirates are fondly remembered and honoured through summer festivals and themed events. Yet the town's history stretches far beyond the Middle Ages, all the way back to Roman rule.
